This powerful novel explores the dynamics of the financial world during the Civil War and after the stock market panic caused by the Chicago fire. Frank Cowperwood, a ruthlessly domineering wheeler-dealer, experiences both the heights and the depths of the financial world, always with his loving mistress championing his every move.

The Financier (Audible Audio Edition) Theodore Dreiser Flo Gibson Audio Book Contractors Books

Worthwhile read overall, mainly by virtue of Dreiser's honest portrayals of American capitalism and big-city politics in the second half of the nineteenth century. Dreiser was a realist, and he pulls no punches. Students of history will find many insights here on the emerging society economy of the U.S. at the time, and on Americans themselves, through lenses that would be difficult to render through non-fictional and academic writing. Which is to say that the characters also ring true. Drawbacks? The pace can be tedious and slow at times, particularly by the fictional standards of the late 20th and early 21st century. His courtroom depictions are particularly overwrought.

Still, Dreiser's prose is precise, workmanlike and readable, which eases the journey. Not up to the standards of 'Sister Carrie', perhaps, but a book that leaves an emotional imprint and new angles of understanding.

The Financier (Audible Audio Edition) Theodore Dreiser Flo Gibson Audio Book Contractors Books Reviews

Dreiser is not so popular today as he once was, maybe because he takes some attention as he builds his character's life and motivation. Nevertheless, the story of a young man's steady progress to wealth and power as he using every tool availabale to him brains, cunning, encouraging other people's cupidity and corruption is fascinating. It reads like a prediction of today's Wall Street wizards.
Great writers and their works are nevver out of date and always worth rediscovering.
This is a dry, old story of a man who is successful in the finance world of the 20th century. He becomes more greedy as time goes on and finally lands in prison for breaking important regulations. Prison changes him somewhat but not enough to continue his pursuit of success once again, albeit, more carefully. The end is nothing new, as he goes west to continue his life, taking along his mistress, who eventually becomes his wife. Pass on this one.
Ser in the mid-1800s, quite an interesting account of a not unpleasant financial wizard seeking self-aggrandisement at the expense of colleagues, friends and family along the way. The story tended to be tediously detailed in parts, to the extent of boredom.
if you want an indepth story of cuthroat 19th century economics this is a very good read. Very detailed on some of the ecoomic
maneuvers and a decent story parallel. Dreiser is somewhat overlooked as a writer beyond American Tragedy but this work is
very worth reading as some of the tactics in use then seem to be re-emerging today
Dreiser's books deal with real life situations with sharply drawn descriptions of the human character and psychology. His knowledge and description of arcane architecture, furnishings, and clothes is very impressive as is his knowledge of the historical backdrop for his story and the political environment of Philadelphia during the Civil War and some years afterward. This is the third novel of his I have read. It ranks third behind An American Tragedy and Sister Carrie, but that in no way diminishes the 5-star rating given.
Would not recommend if you are reading for pleasure because it was to drawn out and too much character development that felt like sloughing through mud. And insofar as the financial aspect, it was way to drawn out and confusing to retain your interest. I didn't appreciate Dreisers writing style.
Like Sinclair Lewis, Dreiser was a keen student of American archetypes. In this case, the protagonist is a man whose single-minded pursuit of wealth ends up threatening everything he loves--his friends, his family, and, ironically, the very wealth he has accumulated. The book is also a finely drawn portrait of how corruption operates in the world of politics at the local and state level. In that way, it belongs in the pantheon of great American novels, illustrating the Gilded Age the way Dickens exposed the underbelly of Victorian England.
Worthwhile read overall, mainly by virtue of Dreiser's honest portrayals of American capitalism and big-city politics in the second half of the nineteenth century.
